Psychoanalytic Criticism
(Sigmund Freud)
Sigmund Freud(1856-1939), Austrian psychologist is the originator of Psychologic Critisism. He named the dynamic form of psychology as Psychoanalysis. It is a form of therapy to cure neurosis which is commonly known as mental disorders. This method is also extended to ether disciplines such as mythology, literature and other arts. To cure psychological disorders, proper understanding of the causes is important. According to Freud, there are three states of mind. 1. Conscious: This represents the reason and logical theory. 2. Unconscious: This is driven by Id(deep unconscious mind devoted to pleasure and commanded byblind instinctual impulses) 3. Pre-conscious: This is secondary process which takes a more circuitous route to gratification through temporary toleration of unpleasure. The Pre- Conscious and Unconscious constantly interact with the Conscious. The repressed traces have strong influence on all human actions. Unfulfilled desires and traumatic past, events and experiences of an individual which are driven out of the conscious and pre-conscious state of mind into the realm of unconscious finds place in repression. Central to the psychological criticism of Freud is his dream analysis. He explained dreams as the main outletfor repressed desires.Actual events gets transformed to dream images. According to Freud, Literature is something like dream because it communicates a symbolic language in an oblique manner. A literature text is taken as the conscious(explicit) and interpretation of the unconscious (implicit) which is the objective of psychoanalysm. -------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------Notes compiled by: J Prabha
