Possession
(A.S Byatt)
Possession by A.S Byatt is, probably, one of the most important books in the last decade of the twentieth century. The bookdescribestwo romances between two couples living in two different epoches. The first couple - Roland Mitchell and Maud Bailey are a pair of contemporary scholars investigating a romance between the second couple- Randolph Henry Ash and Christabel LaMotte , who are nineteenth century poets( both fictional). The plot starts when Roland Mitchell accidentally finds a letter written by his favourite poet- Ash- to an unknown woman. Roland decides to investigate the letter and quickly finds out that the woman might have been an almost completely forgotten nineteenth century poet and social outcast - Christabell LaMotte. Roland contacts an expert on LaMotte's writings and her distant relative - Maud Bailey. Together they decideto go on a quest to discover the truth about the romance. On their way they visitnumerous picturesque places, including France, and findfurther clues, in forms of letters anddiaries, about the development and an inevitablly tragic ending of the romance.Naturally, both scholars, despite their differences, eventually fall in love with each other. Apart from the four main characters, the reader is introduced to numerous other characters, including two feroscious Ash scholars- Cropper and Blackadder, a lesbian professor Leonora Stern, Ash's dull wife Ellen and Christabel's friend and suppossed lover- Blanche Glover. The main strenght of the book is the way it is written. The plot is fascinating and the characters are vivid and believable. The connection between the two couples is shownin a beautifull and subtle way and the endingmanages to be surprising. All the poems, letters, diaries were written by Byatt especially for the book and all of them are little masterpieces on their own.
