Research Methods In Education
(J.O Agbayewa)
The conduct of meaningful research has been a nightmare for students, particularly those in the field of Education. Those that are into the art often fail to adhere strictly to its guidelines and principles thus making their efforts more or less invalid. Against this backdrop, the book ?Research Methods in Education? showcases the basic rudiments of Educational research for students and the- would be researchers in the field of Education. The contents of the book are divided into three units. The first unit is on the nature of educational research. In the unit, its meaning, types, purposes and problems in developing countries are stated. The second unit addresses the stages of educational research which include: the problem identification, the review of literature, raising of questions and formulation of hypotheses, research designs, sampling techniques and procedures, gathering of data, answering of questions and testing hypotheses as well as the drawing of inferences. The problem identification sub-unit encompasses the steps to be taken in identifying a good research problem, sources of educational problem and the qualities of a good educational problem. The sub unit on literature review contains the sources of literature, steps to be followed in reviewing literature, general guidelines and the reference styles. The third sub-unit (i.e. on research questions and hypotheses) states the types, functions, qualities and sources of research questions and hypotheses. Functions and types of research design are stressed under the sub unit on research design while the various sampling techniques and the procedures for sampling using each of these are explained in the sampling sub-unit. The sub-unit on data gathering encompasses the methods of gathering information and data, the procedures to be followed in gathering data and information, the instruments to be adopted and the measuring scales. The last but one sub-unit, shows the various scales of measurement, the conditions for selecting statistics for the testing of hypotheses and worked examples on the application of some of the statistics. The last unit however shows how to test the stated hypotheses and take decision(s). The third unit differentiates between a proposal and report of Educational research and highlights the format for writing each of these.
