David?s mother is seriously ill. When she passes away, David is very upset to learn, a short time later, that his father?s new girlfriend, Rose, is pregnant, and they are all moving to her home in the British countryside while the war in Europe escalates.David hates everything about Rose, and his new little baby brother, George. The only positive thing about this move is that Rose lets him stay in the book-filled room belonging to her uncle Jonathon, who, many years ago, disappeared without a trace when he was 14 years old along with his adopted sister, Anna.The plot moves slowly until chapter seven. One day David is walking in the sunken garden on Rose?s property when a bomber plane crashes in front of him. David is thrown backwards and knocked out. When he comes to, he is in a forest in a new and unknown world. He is befriended by a Woodsman who helps him escape the woods and a pack of wolves led by Leroi, a half wolf/half man. The Woodman explains they must journey to the king?s castle to ask him how David can find a way back to his own world. On the journey, the Woodsman, apparently, is killed by the wolves. More and more of the wolves are gradually turning human and David?s steps are dogged by the wolves and by a master of evil known as the Crooked Man.The wolves lose David?s trail when he goes to the home of seven dwarfs who are enslaved by a vile woman named Snow White. The dwarfs give David shelter, but he leaves soon after his arrival to continue his travels toward the king. David joins up with Roland, who is on a quest to find his missing friend Raphael. As both are traveling the same direction, they go together. So they are not so easily tracked, David and Roland exit the well-traveled trail and stop at a village being terrorized by the Beast, a creature that lives under the forest. The Beast must be killed to save the villagers, before David and Roland can continue their journey. When Roland also dies, David is left to find the king?s castle alone. Once he finds it, David learns what happened to Jonathan and Anna. David will need all of his cunning to defeat the Crooked Man, free Anna and return to his own world.While this may sound like a book for children, it is not. Adults will find this book holds a warning: not everything a person hopes will happen is always safe or enjoyable.
