Ruby and Rose are 2 sisters whose parents passed away when they were still scholl going age. They are being sent off to a orphanage in Cape Town.They have a aunt living nearby in Athlone who is haughty and a snob. Although the girls are her sister's children she looks down on them because they come from Woodstock and she lives in Athlone which she considersa affluent area.She refused to take the girls in and rather referred them to a orphanage. It is 1978. After Ruby was 18 she left the sanctuary and started to work in a hotel as a cleaner. Later she took a job as a companion for a old lady in Sea Point. She also got a job for her sister Rose as well.After the old lady died ,she left a large sum of money to Ruby. Rose met a older man who has a taxi and she got married to him. Ruby joined a canning factory as a office worker after she furthered her studies. She met a older man who has fishing boats at Elands Bay and she started a relationship with him.After she fell pregnant and lost her baby the man Jack Julies told her that he is married and have 6 children. He however bought a house next to Ruby's sister Rose andshe pays rent to him although he does not expect it from her. Rose is totally agains the relationship ,but Ruby continues even after she knew that the man is married, Jack Julies suddenly had a heart attack while he was watchingTV with Ruby and died instantly.He left the house to Ruby in hisWill and also a large amount of money.Ruby did not want to accept the money ,but the lawyer talked her into changing her mind. Then Ruby got sick with cancer and died after a short illness. She left everything she had to her sister Rose.
Amoving narrative about the lives of 2 sisters, their different characters, but closeness and immense love and feeling for each other. Skilfully told. Outstanding Reading
