Aeschylus and Prometheus: Like Father Like SonThere is a parallelism between the life of Aeschylus, father of Greek tragedy, and some of his heroes, particularly Prometheus, father of human race.The intense life of Aeschylus, noble and glorious soldier and famous writer, has also a teint of legend when Bacus appeared in his dream and urged him to write tragedies. By doing so, Aeschylus's writings were of divine inspiration and soon he became famous. Nevertheless Aeschylus was accused of impiety in a court case, he endured public humiliation, and finally he was absolved. Prometheus, the father of all humans, belonged to the divine race of Titans. He showered his mortal children with his own many gifts: strength, wisdom, power, always eager to pass on to them his divine knoledge. As human race grew in wisdom they thought themselves to be equal with gods, enfuriating Jupiter who took their precious fire from them, leaving the mortals in a precarious position. Prometheus rebelled against Jupiter giving back the fire to the humans. Prometheus was sentenced to be bound in chains at the top of highest mountain on Earth. An eagle would visit him everyday to feed on him for many years to come.Humiliated and tortured, Prometheus suffered his punishment with courage and honesty till he was released. He accepted his own destiny without forcing fate. In his heart he was proud of having protected humans beyond death by giving them blind Hope.Aeschylus, the father of Greek tragedy, left Athens and took refuge in Sicily leading a fruitful writing life in his free will exiled. Aeschylus, as his heroes, consulted the oracle and there it was predicted that he would die from the impact of a fallen turtle dropped by an eagle in the sky.He neither could escape his own destiny. 304 words
