The Name Of The Rose
(Eco, Umberto)

Publicidade
The Name of the Rose is one of my favorite books. In this book, a young monk-to-be and his teacher arrive to an abbey. They've been called there to solve a strange murder. After they arrive, more and more murders happen and at first look, there is no connection between them. After some time Adson and William figure out, that the secret must be in the hidden library above the scriptorium. They talk to de monks in the abbey, research books and files. More and more secrets are revealed, all from background history for every monk, to secret passages, through which the monks import women and pay them for their services in food. Everyone claims they're innocent, but in the end, everyone appears to be a sinner. Who can you trust if they are all lying? How do you sort out the liars? Adson and William discover that there is a certain connection between the murders. All the bodies have black traces on their fingers. They also find their way into the library, where strange things happen. The library is a great maze and they leave it to come back another time. The second time they come they are much better prepared. They come to the murderer, who tells them about his method and why did he do it. He kills himself and burns down the library. Outside the abbey, they are trying to burn three people, whose lives have nothing to do with the murders, but are guilty of heretics. The book is much better than this review, it is a must-read. Umberto Eco is one of the best writers ever. read also Baudolino and his others book. He is a pre-descendant of Dan Brown and his DaVinci's Code.
