Rifleman Dodd
(C. S. Forrester)
Rifleman DoddWritten by C. S. Forrester Rifleman Dodd is a remarkable tale of an 18th century war fighter named Matthew Dodd. This narrative is a detailed account of this Rifleman?s journey to reunite with his comrades-in-arms, the 95th Foot, Rifle Brigade. Rifleman Dodd shows one man?s commitment to duty even in the face of dangers such a starvation, sickness, complacency, and the French Army. Matthew Dodd is quite honestly, a true inspiration of any military personnel whether in garrison or in the field. To fully understand the profound story of this British Rifleman, a true grasp of Matthew Dodd should be had. Matthew Dodd, a British Rifleman in the 95th Foot, is solely devoted to his fellow English soldiers and the mission they fought to accomplish. He displays an unsurpassed level-headed mind for combat as he engages Frenchmen from olive groves to skirmishes with his new Portuguese allies to a final lone sabotage of the French Army?s bridge on the banks of the Zezere. Dodd also demonstrates his humane nature even in the face of all the danger as he aided various Portuguese from guerillas to a mentally handicapped boy all while traveling, unceasingly, to his fellow soldiers. Above all, the courage displayed by Dodd as he pushes through French lines to return to his company as well as engage surrounding French forces should be an example to any service member. The story takes place throughout the Iberian Peninsula just after the turn of the 18th century. The area had been enveloped in the Peninsular War for a little over two years at that time. This is determined by the reference to the British military leader Duke Wellington and the references to British forces recovering at Torres Verdas while the French starved and died of disease. From these points, as well as other historical points referred to by C. S. Forrester, it can be discerned that this tale takes place between 1810 and 1811. This points Dodd combating the French just before their fall at Salamanca in 1812, as well as leading the reader to believe that this Rifleman?s actions changed the very outcome of the Peninsular War. To say that Rifleman Dodd is simply a story of a British soldier moving behind enemies to reach his company would be a gross understatement, for this story is more than just a narrative of a nature-walk or a historical timeline of tactics involving on soldier. For in this story, the hero, Matthew Dodd, encounters more than just French soldiers. After his separation from his company, Dodd encounters a handicapped, Portuguese boy referred to as ?idiot.? Dodd takes the boy along with him and helps the boy as best he can without jeopardizing his mission. However, in order to reunite with his fellow riflemen, he is forced to leave the boy behind when he becomes delirious with pneumonia. He later finds company with a group of Portuguese irregulars who travel with him as he sees some of the horrors committed by French army. This does not deter Dodd, who remains focused solely on his return to the rank and file of the 95th Foot. Finally, in order to complete his travel back to the British forces and to make a defiant blow in the French, Dodd sets fire to a bridge that was to be used to cross the Zezere, a fifty-mile river separating British from French. All this was done for the right to rejoin the British 95th Foot and live to fight one more day. Rifleman Dodd is a tale of a soldier?s fight not for glory, but for the right to fight along side his brothers of the British infantry. Told in a time of war in Europe, Rifleman Dodd shows us just what real commitment is capable of when tested. Matthew Dodd is truly an example of the Marine Corps core values instilled in one man. Even as he encountered the many French atrocities, he kept his conviction to the British Army, commitment to the 95th Foot, and acted in the highest honor anyone in such a position could ever hope to achieve.
