Son Of The Mob
(Gordon Korman)
After reading Son of the Mob, you will agree that Gordon Korman has done it again?he has created another amazing book that every teen will love.Gordon Korman is famous for all his books dedicated to teens and young adults, and many of his books are very humorous and amusing, but Son of the Mob is different. Vince Luca, the main character in the story, and the unfortunate Son of the boss of a Mafia organization, seems like someone you would know from your own high school. He?s got a great sense of justice, compared to someone coming from his background, and he always fights to stay far away from his father and anything related to him. Vince?s repetitive struggles to not be recognized because of his father and all of his failures attracted me greatly, as it is something that not everyone can achieve. If you had a chance to be rich without working hard, wouldn?t you take the chance? I?m sure a lot of people in this world would. But Vince?s unfaltering fight to be civilized proves him ethical, and above all, with a lot of motivation, something that almost everyone around him flatly states that he does not have. He never seemed to give up, and always found a way?sometimes through sheer luck?to solve his problems. The characters in Son of the Mob are all quite unique, but Alex would be exceptional even among the unique. From the beginning, he seems like a supportive friend, and he has a distinct personality. He would rather experience his own love life vicariously through Vince?s, and it seems that he?s doing a poor job. However, his plans are all very comical, and though they do not work that well, they do add a lot of excitement within the book. Anthony Luca is another interesting character that makes you want to read on. He seems like the stereotypical mobster?everything from his name to his ethnical background. Yet he?s also different in many ways. He?s actually honest, unlike the ?godfather image? we have subconsciously created after watching all those movies and TV shows. He?s also a caring person, when it comes to his family, and he has various hobbies other than threatening people, like wood-carving.But the introduction of Kendra Bightly must have been one of the most intriguing episodes of the entire story. Kendra wasn?t your normal school-journalist-girl. She?s Agent ?Bite-me?s? daughter, the very agent trying to track down Anthony Luca?s every move and throw the mobster in jail. That would be okay if she stayed in a galaxy far from Vince, but ironically, she?s Vince?s new (and probably only) girlfriend. They get along perfectly, minus the fact that Vince constantly try to avoid any contact with Agent ?Bite-me?.Gordon Korman has an amazing way of connecting characters together and making them alive, as if the reader somehow was absorbed into the book miraculously. His special way of describing the characters through different mediums creates a book that is not only filled with plot, but with emotion. When you?re reading Son of the Mob, the characters are talking to you. And it?s not just Vince, who?s the one telling the story. Everyone in the book has their own version of the account, and only after piecing them all together, do you get a whole idea of what happened.Son of the Mob conveys an image that nothing is impossible, and that we shouldn?t judge things just because it was ?supposed? to be that way. But the words in the story are so natural, it doesn?t feel like a boring lecture. Everything just fits together, from Vince?s point of view, and as time goes on, and more unusual events occur, the story just naturally falls together to form a larger picture. The overwhelming relief when I figured out what was really happening also made me realize that Gordon Korman was holding me in suspense with his words. The careful way every sentence was structured kept the story simple and short, but also with many twists and turns that grabs at every reader?s attention. While I might have written a lot about this book already, I assure you that the adventure does not limit itself to just these short portrayals. If you want to know what happened in the end, and whether Vince Luca and Kendra Bightly ended up together?or not, you?ll have to buy this book from the bookstore or check it out from the local library. And while you?re at it, I highly recommend you to find other books by Gordon Korman, especially the sequel, Son of the Mob: Hollywood Hustle.
