One Billion Dollar
(Eschbach Andreas)
This book is simply too long, although the idea is very interesting. Just imagine you inherit out of the blue one billion dollar! Obviously John is out of his mind and decides to spend some of the money. However, thanks to the interest rate, he could never really spend it all. Nevertheless the inheritance comes along with a prophecy: the heir has to give mankind back their future. Up to the end he does not really figure out how to solve this problem, even though he puts a lot of effort in it. Maybe a little too epic, almost chatty, Eschbach discusses the problems of the planet and fills a number of pages on the flow of money. This results in a loss of tension. For example a nice lady student from the former GDR occasionally plays an important role, disappears then completely and is so weakly described that I cannot really see her.But I see John, constantly. This is normal for Eschbach, his male characters are almost always substantially better prepared and livelier than his women. Now, this might be in the nature of things. For a book, which in fact is thrilling and well written, I ? personally - spent far too much time to read it ? more than two weeks. At the end almost everything changes and the plot becomes unclear. You rather imagine its out coming, but you cannot grasp it black on white. Still there is one inconsistency I cannot explain. John speaks quite well Italian; anyhow, an important scene states that he does not understand a word of Spanish. This is simply not possible. If you have a basic knowledge of one of the two languages, you will discover that it is quite easy to communicate in both countries. These two languages are far too similar ? it is not possible not to understand important parts of a conversation. Sorry, Mr. Eschbach, but that was really poor research and makes it still more questionable.
