10 Things That Keep Ceos Awake & How To Put Them To Bed
(Ms. Elizabeth Coffey & colleagues from The Change Partnership)
Every business has problems, most of which have to be faced by the CEO. People expect him to be a powerful figure, & the Mr. know all. He continuously faces various types of challenges, including competition & accountability. Basically, sleeplessness is the result of the stresses, to which the CEO is subjected day in & day out. If CEO can't get adequate sleep, his mind will not remain cool & balanced, & he may not be able to take quick, correct & timely decisions, leading to more problems, failures, stresses & sleeplessness. Hence answer to this is that the CEO must get adequate sleep. In ten Chapters of this book, the main author along with eleven other contributors, have discussed its various aspects, & identified ten things in business due to which generally, the CEOs are not able to get sleep. Through real life case studies, it gives experiences of ten CEOs, who had been guided by ten experienced coaches, for finding better ways to get results. It is also a fact that, CEOs have to get results for the company, shareholders, stakeholders & satisfy the requirements of the customers & this is becoming harder day by day. Events & pressures inside the company, & mainly outside the company are changing frequently, & are not within the control of the CEOs. With the world having become a global village, the events have become interconnected, & one thing is affecting another. Since one CEO can not have all the required attributes, there should be team work. With the stress having severe impact on the CEOs, the authors have talked about professional coaches guiding the CEOs. This is expected to become a part of the total functioning of the business. The CEOs not having stress, getting sound sleep, improving & aiming for higher results etc., can be achieved with the guidance of the coaches. As per the concluding Chapter, there is no single pill for getting the results, becoming great & making others also great. The authors have listed ten C's as the characteristics, which in their opinion are essential for effective leadership, viz. Consciousness, Congruence, Compassion, Connection, Communication, Culture, Courage, Confidence, Creativity, & Coaching style. Along with the guidance of professional coaches for the CEOs, they themselves also are required to guide their own employees, for getting their best for the company. In the style of the CEO, mainly what counts is his attitude for his people, for identifying their abilities, encouraging & motivating them for continuing to learn & contributing to the success of the company, through team work. In this manner, the CEOs will be able to get higher results, reduced stresses & better sleep. The book shows the real happenings at the top level, & also as to how the CEOs can be guided by the professional coaches to achieve the desired results. This book is specifically for the CEOs, & the senior executives.
