In Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Road Dahl utilizes his trademark ingredients; the ridiculous, the incredible, the impossible, the hilarious, and just a dash of macabre. The result is a humorous and captivating children?s classic. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory tells the story of Charlie Bucket, a young boy who lives with his parents and four grandparents in a cold, shaky little shack on the edge of a bustling city. The city houses the mysterious, monstrous chocolate factory whose proprietor- the ingenious but peculiar Willy Wonka- closed the factory doors to the public years ago. Now, Mr. Wonka announces that the doors will open once again, but only for the five lucky children who find one of the golden tickets hidden within the wrappers of only five of his candy bars. The odds of Charlie finding one of the tickets seem slim to none, millions of Wonka?s candy bars are sold every day, all around the world, and Charlie?s desperately poor family can barely scrape together the money to buy him even one candy bar. When this solitary candy bar fails to contain a ticket, all hope seems lost, but Charlie manages to buy just one more bar, which does indeed contain a golden ticket! Soon, with his grandfather, grandpa Joe, by his side, sweet-natured, honest Charlie finds himself standing before the towering gates of the factory, along with the other four winners; four greedy, spoiled and completely unbearable chidren. Willy Wonka appears and leads the five children and their adult companions into the factory, where the small group of visitors soon see, smell, hear- and best of all, taste- all sorts of deliciously imaginative wonders. However, as they journey through the factory, one by one, each of the children learn lessons about the pitfalls of avarice, self-involvement, and arrogance, lessons that bring their tour of the factory to a premature end. Finally, modest, honestCharlie and Grandpa Joe are the only ticket-holders left in the tour, and it is then that Mr. Wonka reveals the true reason for the golden tickets- to find an heir to his chocolate factory! Charlie is both astonished and thrilled to discover that Mr. Wonka has chosen him to be his heir.  Soon, Charlie, Grandpa Joe and Mr. Wonka are off to fetch the rest of Charlie's family, so together they can begin their new life within the walls of Willy Wonka?s marvelous factory, where the previously poverty-stricken Bucket family will certainly never go hungry again!
