Having worked in kitchens for more than half of my thirty-year old life, this book impressed me with it's candidness, truthfulness and downright dirtiness! Mr Bourdain exposes the culture of kitchens as no one has before, down to the raw, honestgrittiness that no restaurant-goer would probablyever wish to see.
Anthony's turbulent lifestyle reflects that of many chefs - drink, drugs and dodgy dealings. He exposes the envorinment of the inside, and outside, of thekitchen for what it is: hot, dangerous and downright rude. All in all this book is a must for anybody who knows anything about the restaurant scene, or anyone daring to know even more...
The tale begins with the taste of Anthony's first ever oyster whilst holidying with his parents in France, and with this begins a rebelliousness that will stay with him for the rest of his life, as he endeavours to try every single foodstuff available to him... Although his beginnings as a broiler man in P town were particularly awful, this only inspired Anthony to want to be a chef even more, and so off he went to New York to seek his fortune.
We follow Anthony's exploits as he pursues job after job, many offering great money and opportunities, but most of which were rapidly on their way into the Z-listing section of the restaurant guide in the very near future. Throughout this journey we meet a great many wild characters, some of them Anthony's friends, some his worst enemies, some even both. We learn that to be a nasty, swearing, smelly dishwasher is not necessarilly to be the worst person in the world.
Without giving too much away, kitchen Confidential is a fantastic read, keeping you alternately laughing and grimacing as you turn the pages. From his true experiences he truly brings the book to life.
