This book written by a former Vice President of USA, had been on the New York Best Sellers list for several weeks till recently. He has his heart, commitment & priority for this important subject, & he has done lot of work, published some books, films, addressed meetings, & given slide show presentations for creating awareness & public response for this important topic. In 325 pages replete with many pictures, graphics, & beautiful & natural photographs from many sources, he has given the position at present & that some years back, whereby we can conclude that drastic changes have taken place, & are taking place continuously. There is evidence of the changes in nature's cycles & that these may cause true emergency for our earth. In public interest, he draws the attention of everybody towards this crisis & conveys the anxiety of the people of the world, to all nations. There may still be a controversy, whether it is due to actions of the human beings or it is natural. Whatever be the causes, we have to take preventive & remedial measures, to reduce the impact of global warming all over the world. The author had also contributed substantially to the finalization of the Kyoto Treaty, which has been ratified by 132 nations except USA & Australia. Even in USA, many US cities are implementing the policies on their own & reducing the levels to the required extent.
The renowned author writes that we should not feel helpless, since in practice we all can do a lot personally, by educating ourselves & others, & reducing the consumption & wastage of the resources etc. We should reduce emissions from use of energy at our homes, & save energy at our homes by selecting lighting & appliances which are energy-efficient, operating & maintaining them properly, arranging efficient heating, cooling & proper insulation of the house, carrying out a comprehensive audit of the energy utilization for identifying the areas where actions are needed, conserving hot water, reducing stand-by power wastages, improving the efficiency of the office at our homes, switching to the alternative & the green sources of power. A big source of carbon-di-oxide emission is the automobile, & hence we should reduce emissions from cars & other modes of transportation by reducing the total mileage driven, by car-pooling, using means of mass transportation, biking, walking, telecommuting, driving smartly, purchasing a more efficient or a hybrid car whenever necessitated, use of alternative fuels, use of fuel-cell vehicles, reducing air travels etc. We can also do this by consuming less, purchasing the things that last, preferring those products which use recycled packaging, recycling all those items which can be reused, not wasting paper, packaging groceries & other items in reusable bags, proper composting of organic waste, carrying our own refillable bottles for water & other liquids, reducing quantum of meat in the diet, purchasing local products, & neutralizing other emissions by purchasing offsets. On a wider canvas, we should be a change agent by making others know about the climate changes, encouraging & motivating school, workplace, & business etc. to reduce the emissions, purchasing from those companies & stores which are alive to it & are helping in efforts to reduce the emissions, investing in those companies which are helping for this cause, taking political action, supporting environmental groups etc. He gives information about websites for the various points & also for ten misconceptions about this subject. The author has told the story of global warming in an interesting & convincing manner. Every thing is not lost yet. We all can come together, make combined efforts & take concrete actions in time (since time waits for none), with the hope of resolving & converting this crisis into many opportunities, which our actions willcreate in future. A must read book.
