About Love And Other Devils
(Gabriel Garcia Marquez)

Publicidade
Serf Maria de Todos los Angeles, the little marquise of long copper hair, daughter of the marquis Ygnacio de Casaldueor y Bernarda Cabrera, is bitten in the heel by a rabbit dog. In those times, rabbis was an unmistakable sign of devil possession, for which Bondwoman Maria is confined to the convent of Santa Clara to be submitted to exorcisms by order of the bishop of the diocese, Mr. Toribio de Caceres y Virtudes. During her stay in said convent, the little girl gets to know love when she befriends father Cayetano Delaura; who is sent to the convent to exorcise her. The story is set in a coastal colony of South Amercia where the Catholic Church is the central axis of the society. Serf Maria is a twelve year old girl born into a catholic family, but due to the indifference of her parents, she is brought up with the black african slaves of her house; thereby adopting their language, their customs, their culture. The girl is victim of the intolerance of an extremely catholic society which does not see with good eyes that a white girl acts like a black one. The parents of the girl are so caught up in their own conflicts that they hardly pay her any attention. They never show interest in her education nor her upbringing. They thinkthat their daughters destiny is something that is not of their concern, by which they live their lives longing for things they do not have and dreaming about others they will not have. The Church makes its appearance in the figures of the bishop of Caceres y Virtudes and father Cayetano Delaura. The bishop lets himself be influenced by the rumours set up against Serf Maria and accepts the charges against her, submitting her to unnecessary exorcisms. Cayetano was the only one who believed in the innocence of Serf Maria and who showed her another world where love was the basis of everything. Another character, no less important, is the jewish doctor Abrenuncio, chased by the Holy Office due to his peculiar curing methods. He knows that the little marquise is not possessed and is sorry for her to the point that he begs the father of the girl to take her out of the convent. The outcome of the story is tragic, the religious prejudices finished off the life of an innocent.
