The Passion Of Ayn Rand
(Barbara Branden)
Barbara Branden's thoroughly worthless and utterly biased account of the life and times of the American author Ayn Rand is sufficient evidence to show that those who are closest to the author should NEVER, EVER write their biographies. First of all, she wastes a lot of time by explaining her and her husband's relationship to the author and while the reader of this review may think this a harsh way to begin reviewing a book I want you to consider the following. Namely, that since one of Rand's supposed values was Objectivism or Objectivity, how can someone so close to her who was by her own admission so shaped by her philosophy be objective at all when telling her story. As for Rand herself it is without question that her years in Russia under a harsh, brutal communist regime shaped her outlook for her entire life. Deprived of the many possessions and freedoms under such a system she wrongfully blamed the state and what she termed Collectivism for everything that befell her and her family during this time instead of pointing to the true devil in the details; Communism. Naturally every system of government or society is only as infallible as the people not only who run it but also the people who LIVE UNDER IT. Fleeing Russia as soon as the chance became available it was not long before the self-centred and selfishRand was keeping her adoptive family up nights, bashing away at her typewriter as she knocked out one story after the other. That she took jobs reading scripts that by her own admission she didn't really care at all for and only thought about ideas for her own stories and novels once again underscores her selfish and egocentric character. Ultimately though her failure as an author (despite all her book sales) derives from her inability to take criticism as well as her inability to see that others think differently to her and to this end she spent most of her life attempting to brainwash those closest to her into adopting her philosophy. And although she succeeded in some cases this only goes to the point of the lack of intelligence of her friends, nothing more. A far better author can be found in the persona of George Orwell who actually wrote from life experience instead of vague whimsical intellectual airy-fairy ideals. On a concluding note, Rand also utterly fails to understand Roosevelt's New Deal which she falsely labels as Socialist.
