Lord Of The Flies
(Stuart Davies)
WilliamGoldings? title comes from the demoniac symbol of the Beelzebub or the pig?shead, in which contorts itself into every human being?s mind.A groupof young English school boys are marooned on a desert island with no adults. Onthe island, Ralph is elected chief, he is one of the most spoken about boys inthe novel as well as Simon, Roger, Jack, Piggy. Golding uses the symbol of ashell, the conch, to represent the civilisation in the world. Golding?schillingly horrific cycle of events is soon to unfold into savagery anddevilish behaviour. Golding?s novel depicts the insanityin human kind in which the devil bears a grip on all of our lives. The boys soon break up into two tribesbecause of Jack and his obsession for hunting and also because of Ralph?s addictionto the smoke as a symbol of rescue. The characters consist of The Beelzebubwhich is Roger, Jack and every one else in the world. Roger is seen in my eyesto be devilish with his habit to inflict pain upon the other boys. Jack seemsto be just playing the game all children think about with no adults andanything can be done. Ralph seems to constantly be worrying about the effectsof Jack on every one else and he is disgusted when the Hunters let the signalfire go out. Piggy is the boy who is in every school the bullied one. Jacktakes a dislike to him because of his expressions towards Ralph which persuadesRalph?s way of thinking. Piggy is a scientific thinker and when the littlun?say there is a beast he is quick to disguise the fact that in is mind he istwisting to try to understand. The pig?s head is one of a feasted upon pig who?shot blood spouts over the hunter?s handsand with the pig?s head the hunter?s believe that the beats will be satisfied ,but this pig head persuades poor Simon to stray from the group and face hisdemons. Simon is like Jesus in the fact thathe silently retreats away from the groups into the wilderness to think as Jesusdid. Also in a talk with Ralph where Ralph questions their escaping thisdrought of civilisation Simon tells him that he will get off the island alrightwhereas he doesn?t say that he will get off the island somehow like Jesus didportraying his own death. After the split of the tribe there isa savage pack who?s obsession with hunting leads to a death and a logically thinkingtribe with piggy feeding Ralph?s imagination. This novel represents that the Demonor the Devil is inside us all and Golding puts across his views in a verypowerful and energetic way. This novel has been a must read and will be formany more years.
