The Valley Of Horses
(Jean M. Auel)
The second in the earth children series is undoubtedly my favourite. This book is a roller coaster of a ride. In it jean Auel shows how early man may have interacted with his environment. How he may have taken pets and even learned to ride. It?s a wonderful book of love and adventure. In it her main character Ayla meets a modern human for the first time. He introduces her to a different way of life and culture and for the first time real love. Again her research is impeccable and leaves the reader with a sense of wonder at the skills of these early humans. Their knowledge of the plants and animals that filled their world leave modern man shamed in many respects. The hardship and dangers they faced in their daily life were truly phenomenal. I have read many books in which a lot of detail is given about certain subjects. I have often found these novels tedious and found my eyelids drooping with the effort. I never have that problem with Jean Auel?s books even though she sometimes goes into the tiniest detail. Instead I found her descriptions enlightening and invigorating. Afterwards you find yourself wanting to run out and try it all yourself. Such is the power of this writer. Enjoy.
