The Magicians' Guild (book 1 Of The 'black Magicians Trilogy')
(Trudi Canavan)

Publicidade
Set in a world of her imagination, Canavan has created the Magicians' Guild; a powerful force of magically gifted beings set to do the bidding of the King of Kyraelia and purge the city of Imardin of beggars and the poor once a year. These powerful and influential figureheads are despised by the people of the Slums, the poor city outside the walls of Imardin, who, every year on the day of the purge, protest against being chucked out of the city walls as mere trash. These protests usually go practically un-noticed for a force as powerful as the Guild, until a young slum girl by the name of Sonea unwittingly releases natural Magic of their own by rendering a Magician unconcious and breaking their magical barriers with a mere rock. Frightened by the show of her unknown powers, Sonea flees and embarks on a dangerous journey with her friend Cery, to escape the clutches of the Guild. Turning to the Thieves of the city, she is helpless against the mind power of the Guild's High Lord and his fellow magicians, while trying to control her new found skills in magic. She becomes frustrated as she begins to realise that magic is not just incantations, but a heavily responsible force that needs to be focused. What Sonea does not realise is that the real enemy is not the Guild, who wish to find her to teach her, but her immense power building up inside of her, capable of killing both her and anyone unfortunate enough to be within her surroundings when her powers become unstoppable and encompassing. The Guild finally manage to find her when the Thieves realise Sonea is endangering her life by fleeing, and hand her over to the clutches on the awed beings. This is the first book of the Black Magicians trilogy, within which Canavan has created a masterpiece that you just cannot put down! A more realistic take on fantasy, Canavan describes a world where magic is not an unlimited force, but something that needs to be wielded, controlled and recovered from. You discover that no character is what they first appear to be, leaving you in the dark until Canavan chooses to relinquish the hidden depths of her created world. Both literary and fantasy fans will praise this book for being unique and riveting. There is a reason why this series still sells consistently over 2 years after the original publishing date! A true masterpiece and a must-read.
