One Night With A Spy
(Celeste Bradley)
The widow of a spy proves to her late husband?s cadre that the female of the species is far more deadly. Since the days of William the Conqueror, England?s reigning monarch has appointed a quartet of advisors to the crown. The appointment is for life. Chosen from the best and brightest of the aristocracy, the candidates must be cunning (as a Cobra), circumspect (as a Falcon), courageous (as a Lion) and clever (as a Fox). These advisors are known as the Royal Four. They protect and defend the throne by any means necessary. When the time comes, each member of the Royal Four trains an apprentice. Custom dictates that the other cadre members confirm each candidate before his mentor retires. Unfortunately, the latest Fox (Lord Barrowby) has died before informing the remaining three of his choice as successor. Julia Barrowby has acted as her husband?s apprentice for three long years. Lord Barrowby advised Julia to wait until after his death to inform the cadre that she was her husband?s successor. The old Fox had forgotten more than most ever learned about government politics, espionage and strategy; therefore, she heeded his counsel. When the Cobra, the Falcon and the Lion came to pay their respects and ask if Lord Barrowby had mentioned having a protégé, Julia informed them that she was the new Fox. The remaining Three were surprised; but agreed to consider her as a viable candidate, provided she passed a competency test and background investigation conducted by an operative of their choice. Marcus Darden was one of the best espionage agents in England. He had been certain that he would finally be selected to replace Lord Barrowby when the cadre summoned him. However, the Three only wanted him to investigate another candidate, the Widow Barrowby. Marcus accepted his new assignment, certain that he could prove the girl was unworthy. But agent Darden is not the only one watching Julia. When Marcus poses as one of Julia?s suitors, he witnesses several mysterious accidents and unusual occurrences. These disturbing incidents have been occurring since Lord Barrowby died. Julia handles every crisis with dignity, courage and determination. She is intelligent, fearless and supremely confident; an ideal Fox. She is everything that a member of the Royal Four should be; and everything that Marcus wants in a wife. Unfortunately, the Widow Barrowby was not born into the English aristocracy.Julia is the daughter of the Chimera, one of the most dangerous men the Royal Four has ever faced. Fortunately for England, Daddy?s little girl has a mind of her own.
