Stress, The Silent Killer : Don?t Let It Kill You Stress is an unavoidable factor of human life. Since primitive age stress has always remained with us; and we may go to the extent of saying that man?s survival on this planet has remained possible only because he could handle and respond it positively and creatively. In fact, to be very honest, it is stress only that makes our life catchy, interesting and worth living. Won?t you agree that it is stress that keeps us constantly on our toes and we try to be at our best at the hour of need. During crisis it provokes us to remain alert to the utmost extent. But everything is supposed to be smooth and bearable until and unless stress interferes in peace of our daily life and starts influencing our health and happiness negatively. Utmost care should be taken that stress may not be allowed to kill one?s mental peace. How it harms? Actually when we get stressed under a threat, our body responses deciding either to flight or to fight the situation. At this very point of time, the nervous system as well as the hormonal system gets activated making us ready to face the situation. This time some chemicals such as adrenaline and noradrenaline are secreted into the bloodstream and resultantly the heart beats faster and breathing becomes fast in order to get more oxygen. blood supply to brain is also increased to make us more strong and alert .Not only this, the pupils of the eyes dilate for better visuality and hearing power is also enhanced Arteries in the limbs constrict and system paves way to easy blood clotting so that in case of injury, blood loss may be prevented as soon as possible . But when the danger gets over, the tense nervous system is allowed to get relaxed. Heart rate and breathing becomes normal though body consequently feels broken and tired .Thus we see that stress, in a way, is an extremely helpful protective mechanism .But one point important enough to be noted here is that same helpful protective mechanism get activated again when we happen to face boss or meet a deadline and herein lies the root cause that several serious health hazards start threatening our overall well being. So, now it easy to understand that in our daily life if we constantly keep living under so much anxiety and stress that we always feel like tiger about to pounce, our body?s powerful flight or fight response will recur more frequently again and again causing distortion of body and mind and resultantly making us miserable with sleeplessness, depression, and physical mental disorders of various kinds. Moreover if high blood pressure exists already, various stressful situations such as extremes of weather, anxiety, anger, frustration may add higher level of deadly chemicals to the blood stream which in turn may cause heart disease or trigger a heart attack. Thus we see that repeated exposure to stress induces change in nervous system provoking heart to miss beats and also decreases flow through coronary arteries.Stress Is Getting Excess: How Should I Know? Nervousness, heart palpitation, loss of appetite and difficult sleeping are some of the major symptoms pf excess stress. Anxiety, no doubt, is the natural element of human life. But prolonged may lead to serious health hazards as stomach ulcers, high blood pressure, angina, depression, heart disease and even cancer. Who Are To Remain Cautious? The above said health hazards are more common to those ?Ø Who lack close family and community ties,Ø Who have financial problems and inter personnel conflicts,Ø Who are overachievers,Ø Who have very aggressive personalities,Ø Who are facing new situations in life as new job, new locations, new responsibilities, new phases in life as divorce, death of spouse, retirement etc.Women: getting more victims to stress and heart diseases.Say thanks to our modern life style. A general thinking is that Women never have angina or heart attacks before the onset of menopause. But a dramatic change has occurred during recent years. Now more than one third of heart attack and angina patients are young women between the age of thirty and forty five. Also we should know that ?Ø The major root cause of death from heart disease in women is diabetes which carries a 4.5 fold increased risk.Ø Next major risk factor, for both men and women is high cholesterol level in blood. Here the alarming fact to be taken care of is that our body makes more cholesterol when we are emotionally stressed and none can deny that women today are greater emotional pressure than ever before. All the above said factors cause them stress and add to their misery. In a nutshell, the great Indian physician CHARAK can very rightly be quoted, ?Health is the foundation of well being, virtue, prosperity, happiness and salvation.? At last I just have to say that use your physical and mental abilities to the full, but please, don?t be on the run all the time otherwise you will have to leave your loved ones much earlier than you actually should. True, you cannot avoid stress in your life, but you sure can learn to manage it anyhow. So please be wise enough to hasten slowly in life. Abstract by- PRATIMA AVASTHI
