Nineteen Eighty-four
(Orwell, George)
In this chilling view of the future, George Orwell takes the reader on a journey through a reformed England, one which is now under the control of a socialist government led by the enigmatic and reclusive Big Brother. This journey is led by an outer party member, Winston Smith, who is starting to doubt his governments intentions towards the population. As his faith in the party begins to waver he meets a young woman who shares this disillusionment. Soon Winston is drawn into a web of conspiracy and fear. This novel is a stark social commentary on the future of democratic countries as Geroge saw it, and even though it was written fifty-eight years ago, it still addresses many issues that are relavent even in this day and age. Things like classism, poverty, and toture all recive a nod from the author. The novel is a great read and it will change the way you look at the society around you.
