Sense And Sensibility

I love Jane Austen so I reread Sense and Sensibility. As a social scientist I enjoy the characters in Austen?s novels. The Dashwood sisters are like many women today. I think we can all see ourselves in both Marianne and Elinor Dashwood. I know I can.Marianne like so many of us had idyllic visions of true love. We convince ourselves because we are young, attractive and happy a perfect man is our right. We believe the perfect man is out there waiting for us. Elinor is willing to put her hope and life on hold for her family. Like many eldest children she tries to be mom to everyone including her own mom. I know I find my self in the same position worrying about both my children and my parents. Elinor like so many of us is the cog that keeps the family machine functioning.Even though they have some income and a few servants; the Dashwood sisters find themselves on the fringes of the society they crave to be a part of. I think a lot of us would like more money. I am just not sure I would care to be part of the society that existed in Austen?s time.I like how things ended up for the Dashwood sisters. Not just because they ended up in happy marriages. I believe this novel is just as much about people being comfortable in their own skins. Jane Austen has a way of pointing out what is most important in life without ever once saying it. I enjoy visiting the Dashwood sisters and their little cottage in Devonshire whenever my life seems a little stressful. Because of the vivid and detailed way Austen writes about everyday life; I can see those lovely hills that surround Barton cottage. I can imagine myself strolling down those paths and stopping to catch a glimpse of a more idyllic and simpler life.
