Blink
(Malcolm Gladwell)
After the stupendous success of his first book, Tipping Point, Malcolm Gladwell has another winner in BLINK, which he calls the Power of Thinking Without Thinking. It's a book about rapid cognition, about the kind of thinking that happens in a blink of an eye. When you meet someone for the first time, or walk into a house you are thinking of buying, or read the first few sentences of a book, your mind takes about two seconds to jump to a series of conclusions. ?Blink" is a book about those two seconds.According to the author, the human brain over the years has developed its own ways of gathering information, much of which is stored in the subconscious areas. As and when we come across a person or a situation, the subconscious brain instantly analyses it with the help of the data or information it has stored, and gives us an immediate response. This instant response often goes by the name of intuition or gut feeling. Without knowing why, we humans know good from bad. If we were asked to write down our reasons for our responses, most of us would fail, since these responses come from areas in the brain which are not accessible to us in the conscious state. These very responses are used by the advertisement industry to capture the consumer?s attention, and to sell many of their products. For the advt industry, this book has become a ?Bible? of sorts. But Malcolm does not stop here. Having made you understand about the brain?s reflexive thinking, he goes on to enumerate the various conditions under which the blink response can fail or misguide us. For example, in the US, any Afro-American male walking the streets in the night is always considered a criminal by the police forces, and many a killing has occurred because of these false assumptions. In the final run, Malcolm asks you to believe and trust your Blink responses, but to not fall a prey to conditionings. A great book, which delves deep in to subconscious mind, this is a must read for all of us.
