?The truth shall set you free?
-Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi
(1869-forever) ?Next Monday is the last day to submit the assignment on Gandhi, don?t You remember?? she said spilling water over my romance. A year and score of futile existence, God knows why I took History as a subject? Probably for Simi, my self- justified future spouse. In spite of being a regular in College atleast while paying the multiple-fines, you are imposed upon an assignment on some freedom fighters martyr day which they know you are not here for. But who cares, eh? The week passed in zilch and I boarded the deluxe bus to spend the weekend with my parents. ?Shabby read this on your way?, she handed me a thick paperback edition of ?My Experiments with Truth? with a tooth-less Gandhi smiling on the cover. It annoyed me. However she persuaded me with that aphrodisiac kiss to carry it. The first forty minutes were usual sight-seeing sprinkled with nostalgia and sms?s in full-swing until the network gave up. To avoid dozing of a puny 6-hour journey I thought to turn pages across the book, of course with preconceived thoughts not to part with my bliss of ignorance. Screech! Stopped the bus with a treacherous skit and I was transported back to the reality with a jerk. Three hours passed unawares when I was juxtaposed into a medium so unknown and inexperienced - into the life of the Mahatma. His basic principles ? Satya, Ahimsa, Satyagraha and Tapasya had embraced me with arms wide open and filled the vacuum in my heart. I noticed the old lady sleeping beside me shivering in her palsy, unknowingly I took out the pashmina I bought for Ma and wrapped it around her. Why did I do so- I would not have paid heed to any stranger in normal circumstances but something was changing inside me. Anyway as the bus took back to its course I resumed reading too eager to unfasten more about the ideologies he conceived and followed religiously. After ninety minutes of virtual transference, appeared the last page of the book. That was the climax to my enlightenment. History unfolded to me the ontology of a great thinker who overcame all his follies to throne the domain of eternity. Hitherto Life moved on as a never end and I simply did not observe the trend. He introduced me to my invisible self. He was an Avatar Incarnate born to regain the lost order and fight for our freedom. He fostered peace and harmony and laid the foundation of a great country. To equal Gandhi is though not facile but to match a Mahatma is what marks the difference I submitted the assignment on-time and to tell you all I had to pay no fine from then. As for present, I am on a fellow-ship completing my research on ?Gandhi?s life? at Harvard while Smita (Simi) is a reader at the University of London. People no longer call me Shabby but Shubhashish or Mr. Das. And for the shawl, I left it with the lady; my mother had me to buy lots. So said a wise woman once, ?For ?sacrifice? to be real, it must ?cost?, must ?hurt?, must ?empty? us of ourselves? and perhaps Bapu... heard ?it?. ?The truth? set me free.
