The Tavern On Maple Street

Lily and Jack went to College together and now live together in Belfast Ireland.Jack inherits a tavern from his grandfather,and together Jack and Lily ran the place.They hired 4 girls after they heard that the tavern and the surrounding buildings are going to be demolished to make way for a new modern shopping complex.Lily also gave art classes to augment her income.Lily decided to let Bridget one of the girls working for her as a cocktail waitress,stay with them in aroom which is available. Bridget is accident prone and breaks valuable articles belonging to Lily on a regular basis. She also abuses the phone,calling her boyfriendearly in the morning and odd hours. She takes the phone into her room to avoid being found out. When Lily confronts her she bursts into tears. Bridget also have trouble with her boyfriend, who has a drinking problem.He came to see her one night and she had a problem to get rid of him. After that he went overseas and phoned her at odd times.She decided with the help of her colleagues not to see him anymore.Bridget got news while on duty that both her parents have passed away. Bridget hated her parents because they were both alcoholics,and she was ashamed of them.The police officer John Kelly who brought the news was very kind to Bridget because he knew her and liked her a lot. The local priest consoled her and said that he would take care of the funeral, and Bridget refused to let the bodies come to the house and have a wake. The priest was not happy but he let her be. Bridget;s two sisters came to vist her at Maple street to discus the funeral . After it was discovered by accident that the walls of the Tavern was painted by a famous artist the developer promised that he would build around the tavern and not disturb thebuilding .Everyone was happy. Bridget left for London andJohn Kelly followed her and proposed to her.
Avery good story and well written. A pleasure to read.
