A Man To Call My Own
(Johanna Lindsey)
The story, set on a ranchhouse, where the two protagonists, twins Amanda and Marian are far from home and comfort. Primarily a romance which warms the heart, the tale is also one of growth, learning and understanding, something which can apparently only be largely done through mistakes; for what better way is there to learn?
The two twins although identical at birth are so different in their hearts that it is almost undetectable that they are related. Amanda; clearly the beauty leaves Marian forever in her shadow, merging in the dark, preferring not to be seen and chooses to hide her looks with every means possible; wearing large glasses and choosing clothes which make her invisible to the world... and more importantly, to men.
Yet with the death of their father a new journey must be embarked upon, new people enter their lives and all which they once knew is better locked up in a box called ?memory' for it is neither required nor wanted in this new life. It is not long before they meet Chad, both intriguing and bold and naturally attracted to Amanda with her flowing hair and flattering dresses, however the problem is he fails to automatically see that that beauty is not skin deep. The young cowboy ends upwinning the hearts of both girls, though only one captivates his. Naturally however and somewhat inexorably the meddling of sisters turns what could have been a beautiful love into something much more meandering and problems soon ensue.
As the love towards this man grows, so do the girls, and they begin to understand the balance of the world; and in turn, learn about each other; making the transaction from teenager to adult within the pages of this book. They understand that sometimes, the world will not bend over backwards to suit your needs, nor will it be kind when you are not kind to it.
