Hunting And Gathering
(roparz)
To tell the life and the adventures of an ordinary person and to turn it intoa saga, an epic story with such appeal that one needs to know obsessively how it ends: this was Anna Gavalda's successful bet with her novel: 'Hunting and Gathering'.Very quickly, the reader becomes attached, then falls in love with Camille, an ordinary woman, haunted artist, who wanders through her own life like a famished and solitary wolf in the arid desert -her difficult life-. In her life, men. Two, to be precise. Philibert, worthy heir to a struggling aristocracy on itslast legs, who has however retainedaristocracy'svalues of honor and dignity, value ofbeing a decent human being. And thereis Franck, a cook, grumpy and rather obnoxious, whom onehates at first sight but learns to love in the long run. Clovis Cornillac would play that part so well. These two men, close to Camille, lost just like her, remain ather side, drawn like insects to the light of an oillamp. These three characters love each other, hurt each other, hate each other andfinally understand that thecore of life is made from these rejects, voids, refusals, dramas and avoidances. All this, soon enough though, turns into joy and evenjoy for life. It becomes love, madness, sharing and adventure. And this is Anna Gavalda's aim, to turn an ordinary life, like our own, into a real adventure, like our own. Readers go through this novel with fascination, love, fever, as if they had found the Holy Graal, a cornucopia, a bottomless pit of joy. I have spentmarvellous nights with Anna, we have become intimate through this, and I am giving thanks to her gift, her gift to take souls to places, not always better places, but places where lifeends well. As it started, it ends, beautifully, 'Hunting and Gathering' is a link betweenus.
