Assessment Of Surface Integrity In Turning Of An Ductile Cast Iron With Carbides
(Alvarez Rosário, John Ferney)

Publicidade
Assessment of surface integrity in turning of an ductile cast iron with carbidesIn this work, the surface integrity of a ductile cast iron withcarbides was studied during turning operations, considering themicrostructural heterogeneity (volume fraction, size and morphology ofthe graphite and carbides) and the effect of the machining parameters(feed, cutting speed and depth of cut), based on a fractional factorialdesign 24-1. This work presents, initially, a literature review basedon classic works on surface engineering, as an attempt to define themain concepts of surface integrity. Later, the results of preliminarytest are described, which were conducted in order to define the processlevels and the effects of these levels on the surface integrity. Finally, turning tests were conducted on specimens of ductile iron withcarbides, at diameters of 80 and 140 mm. Two cutting speeds (60 m/minand 180 m/min), two feeds (0,1 mm/rev and 0,3 mm/rev) and two depths ofcut (0,2 mm and 0,3 mm) were selected during the tests. Machinedspecimens were analyzed in terms of the properties of the machinedmaterial (hardness and microstructure) and of the roughness of themachined surface. The effect of the machining parameters on theroughness was also studied. A statistically significant dependence wasobserved for the properties of the machined specimens as a function ofthe microstructure and the effect of these properties on the surfaceintegrity is presented.
