Zly Brzeg (an Evil Shore)
(Patykiewicz Piotr)
"Zly brzeg" (An evil shore) is another polish fantasy novel, with explicit worship for Andrzej Sapkowski and his the witcher's saga. I wouldn't be much surprised if the personages met Geralt by chance in some village or on "his duties". This character would perfectly fit to this kaleidoscope of magical creatures appearing on this book's pages - demons, fiends, werewolves and a huge amount of vermin, mentionned by the very author in his text on the cover. The main character of "Zly brzeg" is Zarek, son of Kosciuch. A simple boy from a fishermen's village at an unnamed sea shore (Baltic Sea?). It is the other shore of the sea where the evil shore lays. From there a great evil comes, which will change life of all the fishermen. Zarek is an example of an anti-hero - none of his readers would like to be a clumsy, moody and not very bright dude. However, it sometimes happens that he can afford making something what noone would guess he would do. This book tells the story of change which takes place in this character - from a typical, rural type to self-confident men of strong personality. I have to admit, I'm not sure about my opinion concerning this book. Action runs on slowly, and it accelerates about in the half of story. On the other hand, more important than sword fights are the dialogues. I recomment this book to all those who like Sapkowski's style and what they search in books is not only slaughter.
