Relationship between Organizational Design and Performance Indicatorsof Nongovernmental Organizations in the State of São Paulo. This research investigates the Relationship between the fundamentalaspects that set organizational designs ? under Mintzberg? view ? andoperational performance indicators of Nongovernmental Organizations inthe state of São Paulo. On the subsidiary way, it explores therelationship between organizational designs and activity sector, age, size, and funds composition. The fundamental aspects correspond to theparameters of design and situational factors. The performanceindicators are analyzed in their quantitative and qualitative aspects.Indexes of resources application on secondary activities and mainactivities, labor productivity and capital productivity were employedto analyze the quantitative indicators. As for the qualitative aspects, the main factors with which the examined entities are under obligation, aiming to satisfy the beneficiaries, were analyzed. This inquiryembraces a hypothetical-deductive approach and performs a fieldresearch with 34 entities affiliated to Nongovernmental OrganizationsBrazilian Association in order to guide interviews. This paper, considering the set of NGOs, discerns three predominant organizationaldesigns ? professional bureaucracies, adhocracies and missionary. Moreover, considering each NGO, it detects an absence of pure types. Those considerations imply in three conjectures: presence of hybridconfigurations; structural transitions; and a new design notcontemplated in the Mintzberg? original typology. This analysisverifies that most of the financial resources are applied in the mainactivity and low indexes of labor productivity and capital arepredominant, regardless the used methodology. It observes that ?identifying users needs? and ?maintaining a relationship with courtesyand respect? are the two main quality factors. This investigationobserves that all organizational designs are related to young and smallentities. It verifies that entities close to professional bureaucraciesare related to the fields of education/research and racial or genrebias and the majority of their funds comes from internationalcooperating agencies. The NGOs close to adhocracies are associated tothe social-environmental and human rights defense areas and show agreater diversity of fund resources; the NGOs close to missionary typesare associated to human right defense area and obtain the greatest partof their funds from governmental agencies. This inquiry states thatentities close to professional bureaucracies show better performancequantitative indicators, whereas, on the other hand, those close toadhocracies are associated to worse performance quantitativeindicators; entities close to missionary designs show intermediateperformance indicators. The results set forth that entities close toprofessional bureaucracies achieve better performance indicators, sothey reject the hypothesis that NGOs close to missionary designs wouldbe the ones to show better performance indicators. Further researchwould verify which of those conjectures regarding the organizationaldesigns in NGOs can be corroborated.
