Beetroot is a special vegetable, therefore all of a sudden one lies before an apartment in Seattle, is thrown through a window in New Orleans and sent by postal order to a perfume manufacturer in Paris. A story that starts with a beetroot ends up with the devil. Alobar is king of a small eastern european kingdom of the ending ancient world. It is usual to kill the king with a poisoned egg, when his hair turns grey to replace him by a younger king. Alobar escapes with the help of one of his wives and travels to India, where he saves Kudra from Suttee widow burning and learns from the Bandaloopers to extend his life. Kudra and Alobar travel through the old world and through the centuries, Constantinople and Greece, where they meet the dying god Pan, who accompanies them from now on including his very strong smell. Not to attract attention with this unpleasant smell they develop a remedy in the form of a perfume based on beetroot.Always they are banished after a certain time from the locations they settled because of their strange way of living and the fact that they do not seem to get older. In the Middle Ages they are running a perfumery on Paris. But also there they have to flee some day, because the monks in the neighbourhood suspect something evil going on, which is also caused by the activities of the meanwhile invisible god Pan, who influences the dream soft he monks. In our times there are Madame Devalier and her assistant V?lu in New Orleans, Priscilla in Seattle and the brothers LeFever in Paris, who start out to solve the secret of the incredibly infatuating flavour they have detected in an old perfume bottle in the shape of god Pan that derives from the old perfumery in Paris next to the monastery. Kudra disappears some day into a transcendent world, but comes back in present time. Pan returns to the mellow hills of Arcadia. Alobar gets into prison. His cell companion leads all participants together what finally opens out into a happy ending.
