Arthur Dent is living in simple circumstances in a small house in England. One morning though this idyll is disturbed as a construction company with demolition machines appears in front of his door to knock down his house for a ring road. The plans were open to inspection already for over one year at the responsible administration, they said. Little later a vogone construction fleet appears around earth and declare that earth has to be blasted for the construction of a hyper space bypass route. The plans had been open to inspection for more than 50 earth years in the responsible administration on Alpha Centauri. Arthur Dent is saved by his friend Ford Prefect, who turns out to be an alien of the area somewhere at the Beteigeuze being on earth to write articles for the Hitchhiker?s Guide to the Galaxy.At first they land on a ship of the vogone construction fleet, then on the space ship of the two-headed, three-armed and totally nuts president of the galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox, who had kidnapped the ultramodern space ship Heart of Gold and himself to explore the universe with he help of the unimprobable unimprobabilty drive of the Heart of Gold. There they meet Trillian, a second survivor of earth, who was picked up by Zaphod there, before it was destroyed. After some troubles and chases through the Vogons they land on the planet Magrathea, where they have to realise that planet earth is a huge computer, which creation was ordered by mice to find the last question whose answer is 42...On Magrathea they at first are attacked by two thermonuclear missiles that transform into a flowerpot and a blue wale as a result of the unimprobable unimprobabilty drive Arthur activates in the last moment.The computer Deep Thought had been calculating for 7 million years to find the answer of all questions, the universe and all, and the answer was 42. Therefore Deep Thought created a second bigger computer over another 7 million years that should find the question fort he answer 42: earth.
