Weird Ideas That Work (11 1/2 Practices For Promoting, Managing, And Sustaining Innovation)
(Robert I. Sutton)

Publicidade
Innovation is the key to the growth of business. One of its basic techniques is group brain storming, in which generally the group includes a few persons not connected with the problem. Further all emerging ideas are at first recorded, including the wild ones, no immediate comments are made & no one is allowed to laugh at the seemingly stupid ideas. It has been observed in the past that, several good ideas came from the unconnected persons, & also some wild ideas led to best of the products. Then, why not recruit some persons in the company who are not from the normal run of people, not having normal character traits & see as to how much more creative they can make our organizations. Even from junk we can get some novel ideas,(which the author calls as weird ideas), if we can identify the novelty therefrom, by using our imagination. In fifteen Chapters contained in three parts of this book, the author has discussed some peculiar, silly & bizarre ideas, for making the organizations more creative. The book is based on research, discussions, conversations & e-mail exchanges from many persons in the field of innovation. The author provides some proven but non-conventional ideas, for converting our organization to a creative & innovative one. It shows as to how some of the best teams & companies, have used such practices for obtaining new ideas. It gives examples for each of the practices, from various companies. Some of these strange practices are viz. recruiting slow learners, whom we do not like & whom we do not need; using job interviews to get ideas; encouraging employees to ignore & defy superiors; making some happy persons fight each other; rewarding failure also, but punishing inaction; deciding that which may fail, but convincing others for its success; planning to do some impractical things; avoiding & boring customers & critics etc.; not learning from persons, who have solved similar problems; forgetting the past successes of the company. Some persons may take these as absurd suggestions, but these appear to provide breakthrough. What probably is needed is striking a balance between the conventional practices, & these so called absurd suggestions.
In one of the important Chapters the author has discussed about building companies, where sparks of innovation are generated as a way of life. The author provides nine guidelines, which will help in generating our own such odd ideas, & also in applying these new ideas for continuing innovation. These are viz. some times no management is the best; innovation includes selling the new ideas; we require flexibility & rigidity; provoke discomfort so as to get new ideas; treat things as if they are temporary; make the process simple; willingness to live even with some drawbacks (of innovative persons); learning to fail faster when required; be open to all ideas. But the person's attitude towards work, & towards each other, should be right, then they will be better able to implement such absurd ideas also. We should always be keen & willing to think, be curious, be positive, take risks, & we may get some other absurd ideas ourselves. Since some companies have already got results from odd methods, it is worth learning therefrom & implementing in our own organizations. This abstract writer has also been associated with innovation in his own career, & he is also of the view that innovative ideas generally do not come from the routine actions, & we have to try the seemingly stupid & drastic measures, so as to get a quantum jump in our successes.
