It goes far back in history, only briefly, to explain the situation in question. It has managed to filter the complexity of the matter into a very simple narrative to understand. The book is like a complex web of issues and situations gathered together to show the cause of the World War. It goes behind the scene to present the exchanges that the leaders of the great powers conducted, it paints a clear picture of the situation, motives, the history and the reason behind it all. I would go as far as call it a classic and not help it but just wish if only all the books where so clearly written and informative as this one!Maybe I should summarise this book with these words: While the English were taught in their schools that war between civilised people is unacceptable, the German pupils were taught that they were surrounded by a vicious circle of jealous countries who they will have to fight one day. England is almost the hero in this book while Germany is almost on its own to blame. ?What you'd enter this horrible war just for a scrap of paper!? The German Chancellor exclaimed, but if anything the English honour their word and keep it no matter what.Besides explaining the events that took Europe to the world war this book takes you to the powerful, the political elite and those which control the events.It demonstratesthe way these people thought, It allows us to see how their mind works, what are their true motives as this extract might demonstrate: Diplomacy, which is just another word for a game ofskilful lies and trickto make the opponent accept the conditions.
