George Orwell
(Animal Farm)
?Animal Farm? by George Orwell is a fascinating study into what goes wrong when a community gains the freedom it desired, but greed, power and corruption impact negatively. Orwell?s text is called a novella, a short novel, and is subtitled ?a fairy story?. The idea that a group of animals on a farm might rebel against their owners (Mr and Mrs Jones) and rise up to vanquish their control, of course, at once seems highly improbable and aimed at a target audience of children. Yet, this short book is a serious, powerful study into how society loses its utopian promise, when there is gain or control to be had. Orwell?s interests were in how man reacts to his society, the rules that he lays down, and how the common man is usually constrained and controlled, either knowingly or unknowingly, by those he allows to have power or privilege over him. The animals set up seven commandments which are meant to set them apart from the vices and corruption of mankind, yet, one by one, their leaders (the pigs) take advantage of and abuse their position, until they are barely distinguishable from their original enemies. What starts from a heartfelt, emotional speech by a dying pig, turns into seven set rules of living, which slowly, over time, get twisted and manipulated into one single commandment, one rule ? ?All animals are equal, but some animals are MORE equal than others?. Here, in this phrase, we have the crux of the problem in all societies, which the author is truly interested in. How could systems of government, such as Communism work, if no-one will stay satisfied with a fair share? Is greed a natural instinct that must be fulfilled? Basically, can we not all, as people, share in this world and society in a fair, decent manner?George Orwell wrote this text in 1946, a time of turmoil and confusion in the world, post world war, a period of transition and fear for what was coming. It is therefore understandable that his negative concerns would be captured in this brilliantly written, satirical study of Communism. All of the key characters are similar to, or aligned with major historical characters from the world of politics, with many considering all of the animals to have major characteristics which fit well with the Russian Revolution and the inspirational leader during the early nineteenth Century, Lenin.
