Odds And Ends
(Woman's Day)
OK Ladies! How many wish they had time to read magazines! The only time I had was while I waiting for a dentist, a doctor or my car. Then it was to catch the high lights, because I knew I would never finish the article. So when I became a freelance, I started ordering magazines I wanted to write for. One of these magazines is Women's Day and I want to share with you some of the things I felt was worth paying attention to in this issue, March 2007. For those not familiar with this ladies journal, the book is full of little articles on various women's' subjects. This book has a lot of important information on heart issues for women. Some, I am sure has been drummed in to our heads, like high cholesterol, blood pressure, and our diet. Something, I wrote about a couple days ago, Monday, National Heart Day for women. The book is full of suggestions to healthier living. For example, Honey is now being found to curb side effects of cancer treatments, helps stomach ulcers heal, a natural antiseptic, kills harmful bacteria, reduces inflammation and helps heal sores. I will keep this in mind, honey is more then a sweetener! Pain relievers can cause a multiple of problems, there is a short article on this and what are your best OTC options. Difference being... Advil, Motrin- pain, fever, antiinflammatory andmenstrual cramps side effect can be serious.Prolong use or abuse can cause serious complications, for those who suffer from high BP or heart or kidney distress. Tylenol- treated for fever and minor aches and pains. Abuse can cause liver problems in those of us who drink more then seven drinks weekly. Aleve-Pain, fever and all day relief for joint pain and inflammation. same complications can occur as in Advil, Motrin if abused. Aspirin-good old aspirn, we know what this simple drug can do to help in a heart attack, but if abuse it can really mess up your kidney's, stomach and can cause internal bleeding. The biggest thing here! Use common sense when using these medications. This mag is full of information on Healthy Heart Issues and if you can pick this magazine up you and your lady friends can have fun and could really benefit from this issue. There is articles on High Blood Pressure, and the information on how this chronic illness can cause havoc with other things in our life style. With a page of stats that will make you step back! Did you know...267,000 will die this year from heart related problems and only 40,000 will suffer and die from breast cancer. Wow! I have to give credit to this issue. They do a really good job of explaining the difference ingood cholesterol and the differencesbetween good HDL and bad LDL. Foods that make a difference, oatmeal, nuts, fish, and plant sterolsare encouraged by dietitians. But the bottom line is you need to be under a doctors care for these complications and the older you are the more important these facts become. I turn fifty this year and though I don't feel bad, I know the best way to enjoy my future is to prevent problems where I can. After all of this good heart stuff, my favorite part of the whole book and ...The Recipes in this issue is on the money for taste and looks, but best of all they are healthy and easy to prepare. Cajun Chicken and Shrimp with peppers, rice, and okra looks so good!!! Smoked Pork Chops with cabbage & apples and my favorite Brisket with dried fruit. They also have a Best-Ever Fried Chicken that I want to try this weekend. I always have my eye out for new recipe's for fried chicken. I don't know anyone who doesn't have thirty fried chicken recipes. It would make you cry, at all the ways people will prepare a fried chicken. Closing, this magazine has other stories like, Live to100, Four quick ways to live longer, and healthier. Rise and shine, own a pet, take a nap, eat more berries, that's it! Then to end this there is a short article, 15 things to do in fifteen minutes, gave me something to ponder and it gave me a little spirit, too
