Survivor
(Chuck Palahniuk)
Survivor is the story of Tender Branson, one of the last surviving members of the Creedish Death Cult. It begins with the hijacking of Flight 2039 and as the plane descends closer to the ground, to its final destination, Tender unravels the story of his life. With the pages in reversed order, the reader gets glimpses into the character?s childhood, each chapter revealing a new and astonishing set of facts. He starts out as a domestic servant, working for an ultra-rich couple that never comes home. Their only source of communication is through a loudspeaker and each day his duties are perfectly arranged for him in a daily planner, down to the minute. During his free time, he likes to convince others (who have mistaken his number for a suicide hotline) that their lives are worthless and exacerbate their urges to commit suicide. While he sprinkles his polyester flowers one day, he runs into a girl named Fertility Hollis, the sister of one of his phone victims. He immediately becomes infatuated with her, fantasizing about her ghostly body. It turns out that Fertility has the ability to see into the future, which is a hereditary trait passed down from her mother. After the majority of people in the Cult surrenders to the ?Departures? and a handful of others are murdered by a serial killer, Tender is the last member to remain alive. This results in his rise to stardom, as an agent uses his tragic personal background to gain money and fame. He becomes an almost unrecognizable being, with steroids running through his veins and a collagen-filled face. Although the plot may seem farfetched and completely imaginative, the brilliance of Chuck Palahniuk?s work is that he makes the reader very aware of the disadvantages of our society through the innovative story line and characters.
