Othello
(Shakespeare)
Jealousy is a powerful emotion, one that can destroy relationships, and consume the mind. Once the seed of jealousy is planted it can lead to devastating outcomes. Jealousy can easily turn into anger, and overwhelm it?s victim making them obsessed with the notion. In the play Othello, many of the characters fall victim to jealousy, causing them to commit acts they would otherwise consider unthinkable. Othello's jealousy against Desdemona is perhaps the strongest emotion incurred in the play. The jealousy he experiences turns him insane with rage, and he loses all ability to see reason. This early seed of doubt allows Iago to play on Othello's Jealous nature, and concoct a plan to take advantage of Othello. Iago slowly leaks his poison into Othello and soon has the result he desires, Othello is overcome with jealousy. Othello continuously denies his jealousy, but it is apparent that he is losing his mind with the thought of Desdemona?s unfaithfulness. Although he states that only with proof will he believe Desdemona is unfaithful, his jealousy is already morphing as he starts to detach from reality. Soon after, with Iago's "help" he believes to see undeniable proof that Desdemona is unfaithful with the loss of the handkerchief. Othello experiences jealousy so strong that he delves into a fit of epilepsy. This epilepsy fit is proof that Othello is now consumed with jealousy and from henceforth on cannot be convinced Desdemona is faithful. Othelllo's jealousy soon turns to anger as he struggles to cope with the feelings of betrayal.. He accuses Desdemona of infidelity and though she adamantly denies it, he is not convinced. Othello believes there is no other way to resolve the situation then the death of both Desdemona and Cassio. After Desdemona's death, and Othello discovers the truth, Othello chooses to commit suicide. In his death speech he states that he wants to be remembered as one who was not easily jealous, but one who was perplexed and misled. The conclusion of Othello shows that jealousy is a raw, passionate emotion that can erode a person?s morals. It demonstrates the power jealousy can hold over people, causing them to lose their minds. Iago exploits human nature and uses it to his advantage. He is able to manipulate many of the characters in Othello because of their jealous nature. Iago manipulates Othello and incites his jealousy, eventually achieving success when Othello becomes blinded by jealousy. This overwhelming jealousy Othello experiences causes him to murder his wife for no reason other than speculation. At one point or another every person experiences jealousy, but based on how each person deals with the feeling, it can become a very dangerous emotion. The play Othello displays the extreme outcome of a person tormented by jealousy. Although written hundreds of years ago, Othello still captivates audiences with it?s portrayal of the desperation one feels when jealousy overtakes the mind. People can still relate to Othello because human nature does not change. . Othello demonstrates the disastrous consequences that may ensue when a person capitalizes on the jealous nature of another human.
