The Frozen Lake
(Elizabeth Edmondson)
Take two families returning to spend Christmas in an atmospheric setting amidst rumblings of disharmony, add the mystery created by a few well kept secrets threading back a generation or two and fuelled by the addition of the odd black sheep, and you have the framework for The Frozen Lake by Elizabeth Edmondson. This book should surely be made into a film or a mini series, as it has all the qualities and ingredients inherent in a first class saga. Set in the English Lake District, as Christmas approaches, the characters are assembled, many of them lured by the fact that for the first time in sixteen years the lake has frozen. As the story progresses it becomes apparent that veiling the truth creates ripples and one lie begets another until the web is so complicated and yet so delicate, it takes only a breath of air, breathed by an inquisitive member of the family like Alix to disturb the gossamer threads of those who aptly play the role of spiders. The amount of control necessary to keep the lid on past events requires a tremendous amount of energy and a considerable measure of dysfunctional behaviour. As the truth unfolds aided by the unseen hand of fate, the relationships which the characters have with each other begin to change and develop. New characters are interspersed with the family members, and the skins of denial and deception are sloughed, as the liberating truth emerges triumphant to claim its victims and its victors. This is a masterful tale, cleverly crafted by the hand of a gifted writer. The rich cast of characters never overwhelm or overcomplicate the story, and the reader is swept along by the growing sense of intrigue. A real page turner, this charismatic tale is not to be missed.
