Deadline (how Premier Organizations Win The Race Against Time)
(Dan Carrison)

Publicidade
Due to many variables, completion of any work within a dead line, may not be entirely in our hands. However, since time is of essence to the customer, many times unrealistic target dates are thrust by the customer & the top management, upon the teams, making the assignment a challenge. If it is not accepted willingly, there are chances of failure. Then the employees may keep records of their all actions & the reasons, thinking that these will be useful when the target date fails. In six Chapters of this book the author presents case studies of six large organizations, which managed their entire system in extraordinary ways, to meet the required deadlines of their major assignments. It is based on personal interviews, & on-site observations of these six organizations, since the best information comes from those who have been directly responsible for the results of these projects. It describes as to how, some serious deadlines were met by members of self-controlled teams, in spite of pressures, problems & fears of lurking failures. Their experience is that without getting panicky, anxiety & tension, but maintaining a balanced mind & controlling in a systematic manner, these can be met. Since meeting a major dead line or not, can affect our career graph, it should be seen in totality. As a result of the study of these six case studies, some of the emerging important points are viz. the teams had taken the schedule as sacrosanct for enforcing purposes, since any adjustment was difficult. These schedules were made by realistic assessments of the situation, & these indicated the ambitions of the organizations. Mini target dates for portions of the work were set up, their completions celebrated, & expected slippages alarmed every one concerned in time. Partnering was used in a big way for major long-term works, even with the adversaries for closely working together, including obtaining cooperation from customers & suppliers, with the thinking that they all were parts of the big project. Risk taking in the uncertain situations was done & accepted, along with the efforts for risk reduction, by preparing back up plans, getting creative solutions by brain storming & even by insurance. This even led to binding of the team members together for focused actions. Maximum contribution was been given by the company personnel, who were keen to participate in these challenging assignments & were not fearful & were loyal to the company. This was also made possible by the full involvement & support of their families, which led to reductions in their personal problems. In this way, ensuring meeting the dead lines, things were made easy for the customers to plan their own programmes. The leadership of these large organizations had also to gear up for this purpose e.g. they invested substantially in procuring & storing materials etc., so as to be independent of the local suppliers. The most important thing is that, the people were not afraid of the target dates, nor of the requirements & they willingly accepted the challenges & transformed the organizations. In a nut shell, it is a fascinating book. The procedures adopted by the successful teams, are useful for guidance in our own endeavours. For any organizational leadership, these are important lessons, so that there is discipline in the organization & no chaos.
