Six Disciplines For Excellence (building Small Businesses That Learn, Lead And Last)
(Gary Harpst)
All persons, including those in small businesses, want to achieve successes, but it is not enough. We must aim for long-term excellence, that too a lasting one. This is because we should be aware that, small businesses also contribute a lot, to the nation's economy. In ten Chapters of this book, the author discusses, six basic principles for learning, as to how to overcome the obstacles, generally faced in the path of growing businesses. These are based on the experience of the author & many others in the line, & are implementation oriented. It is not a magic solution, but a long-term programme. After explaining the meaning of excellence, each of the six disciplines are described along with examples, for their implementation, with perseverance. The six major discipline areas are summarized as viz. deciding what is important i.e. mission, values,& vision; setting goals that lead i.e. goals with targets for next one to five years; aligning system i.e. processes, policies, persons & technology; working on the plan i.e. measuring, reviewing & assessing; innovating purposefully i.e. solving problems, getting ideas & recognition; stepping back i.e. examining factors inside & outside the business for updating strategy. This total set is a systematic & integrated system of learning, wherein elements of strategic planning, quality management, business process automation, improvements, & personnel management are included, so that the complete organization learns execution of the strategy, for making & maintaining it, as an excellent business. Moving towards excellence being a challenge, we should assess readiness of our organization & encourage the employees, who should be aware of the customer's expectations, for meeting them continuously. It is expected to lead to continued learning of the employees, satisfied customers & more profits etc. This book is a step by step guide, specifically for the already running small businesses(where generally they may employ 10 to 100 persons), who have survived the initial stages, so that they can go forward to the stage of lasting excellence. The owners & entrepreneurs should understand, & apply these disciplines systematically, so that these businesses can improve day by day. This book is esp. useful for many of those small businesses, which do not have adequate departments/persons, to tackle these challenges.
