While reading this book we find ourselves in the described world very fast and we feel like home. The pleasure of reading is disturbed just by one fact - that it ends so soon... It's a short story of a man who defined happiness differently than we did. His childhood... but to the point: no one has so far described a crime in such details. Any author hasn't analysed so precisely the psychology of a serial murderer. Furthermore, the world of this book is not a world of pictures, sounds or feelings .... it's a world of smells. Smells of Paris from two hundred years ago - from the beautiful and rare ones to the less pleasant, more and more disgusting. In this world an orphan grows up - he doesn't know his father, his mother died while giving birth to him. After that, wandering from one orphanage to another, he loses his illusions towards the world. What, however, makes his different than another people is an incredible gift of recognising the smells, differing them, connecting and mixing... His life becomes a pursue of a perfect smell. Pursuing perfection indeed makes noble, but how can we know whan the border of craziness is traversed? What is the most important in life? In this life of a man who was never treated well by destiny, there's one obsession: this perfectly beautiful smell. Nothing is important, there are no obstacles, including moral codes - nothing can stop a young genius. Even one life - or many human lives - are little important in comparison with the necessity of ideal... But why? What is a real aim of this crazy research? Power? Money? It becomes a giant surprise that looking for the smell was performed for a slightly different reason... But what's the worst in this story is the fact that from the beginning to the last page we side with the murderer...
