The Rainmaker
(John Grisham)

Publicidade
Rudy Baylor is a bright young lawyer full of hope and idealism about
the law, in his last days of law School and with the majority of his
subjects concluded he has but two remaining; the Napoleanic Code and
what is commonly known as Geezer Law. It is here that he meets Dot and
Buddy Black, whose son Donny Ray is slowly dying of Leukemia and who
wants to sue the insurance company responsible for denying Donny Ray
what would have been a life saving bone marrow transplant. Thus, the
rookie lawyer who has not yet passed the all-important bar exam is
drafted into a David vs. Goliath battle against the mighty Great
Benefit life insurance company.

To make the situation even worse, he is forced to declare bankruptcy as
his debts catch up with him and finds himself looking not only for a
place to work but also to live. Pounding the pavement in search of a
job he finally secures employment only to have it taken away from him
time and time again. And his case looks to be slipping away from him
too, the judge is an old friend of Leo F. Drummond, Great Benefit's
lawyer and is clearly in the company's pocket.

While the legal team hired to defend Great Benefit have been chosen
from the cream of the firm's crop, Rudy's own legal assistant, his
paralawyer Deck Sheflett, has failed the bar five times and is not even
a lawyer. Somehow, Rudy must see through the lies and deception
perpetrated by Great Benefit and obtain justice for his client, knowing
either way that Donny Ray will die because of the operation that the
company denied him. Ultimately, he must look with new eyes upon his
chosen profession and upon what he has become as well.
