Mohandas Gandhi, Whom most people know as Mahatma, meaning ?GreatSoul,'; is one of the most prevalent images in the minds of those who think about greatleaders, in the movement for human rights and non-violence. However, not much isknown about his life as a child and his achievements in the early twentieth century. Allthe staging grounds in Gandhi?s stance towards non violence, human rights, and peacetook place in the years leading up to the twentieth century and the first decade after.Gandhi was born in Porbandar, India on October 2, 1869. His family, whichconsisted of two brothers and one sister lived a rather good life. Gandhi?s? father,Karamanchand Gandhi, was a government official for the state of Porbandar. His mothercould neither read nor write, but was very religious and was known to go on extendedfasts. Gandhi?s mother affected her young son at a very young age. In the state thatGandhi lived there were over two dozen religions. Gandhi learned to accept all of thedifferent religions at a very young age. Gandhi?s child hood was not very different fromthat of a normal child, the only exemption is that Gandhi always felt a sense ofresponsibility and duty. When Gandhi was seven years old his father got a new job asprime minister of Rajkot. Gandhi continued his education and his life as if nothing hadever changed, until he was married at the age of thirteen in 1882. The future generations will scarcely believe that such a man in fleshand blood, had tread this earth.? Albert Einstein Mahatma Gandhi?s real name was Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He was bornin 1869 at Porbandar in the state of Gujarat in INDIA. His father?sname was Karamchand Gandhi and his mother?s name was Putlibai. He wasthe youngest in the family of one sister and three brothers. His fatherbelonged to the family of grocers but himself was a minister in thecourt of a local ruler. He was not very educated but his richexperience of practical affairs stood him in good stead in the solutionof the most intricate questions. Both the parents were deeply religiousand frequently visited temples and took their meals only after dailyprayers. In school, Gandhi was a mediocre student. He did not talk to anybodyand was very shy. He was afraid that other children would poke fun athim. Mahatma Gandhi and Indian Cinema Mahatma Gandhi was a multi-faceted man, one whose writings spannedevery subject under the sun, including: agriculture, education, science, sanitation, economics, literature, industry, women, children, health, family planning, religion, and, of course, politics. Many weresurprised to learn of his prolific writing, and were astounded to hearthat he had probably written more than anyone else in history (hiscollected works run to over 100 volumes, several hundred pages each).Mahatma Gandhi was born during an era of progressive evolution ofcommunication technology. Unfortunately, he was born in a country, which was under the clutches of foreign rule. Mahatma Gandhi, was apassionate opponent of modernity and technology, preferring the pencilto the typewriter, the loincloth to the business suit, the plowed fieldto the belching manufactory, printed words to moving pictures.Moving pictures made its appearance in India at the beginning ofthe twentieth century, when the country was poised for major social andpolitical changes. A society that had remained unchanged for centurieswas being transformed in the face of technological innovations. Cars, airplanes, radio broadcasts and photograph records had recently beenintroduced, bringing with them new status symbols as well as access toforeign ideas.
