Little Women
(Louisa May Alcott)
At first glance, this novel presents itself as an innocent emotional adventure about a household full of women in a seemingly less complicated time. However, it grows deeper and darker in its explorations of interwoven relationships between family members, neighbors and strangers. It has a strange kind of poetry in its look into literature, philosophy and the theatrical parodies of life. Some morbid, some seemingly prophetic episodes, but over all femininely self indulgent and still bound by the social mores of the times. The heroine of the story is the writer of the piece and oneof the major female characters. Their stories are artfully woven togetherover a period ofyears that allowus to see the development of each of the four sisters in the household. Most of the men seem outrageously overwhelmed by the female presences and it is a question as to the possible fancy of the writerconsidering the perspective we witness. It is most definitely a female perspective with some dark forbodings and romantic notions, but it most obviously gives in to the expectations of the predominantly male will of the time. That is, if you want to be published, the limitations of your audience must apply. Whether the ending is happy or inevitable is left to the imagination or emotional content of the reader. All in all it encompasses a tale that is interesting and entertaining enough to explore more than once.
