Nineteen Eighty-four
(Orwell, George)
By all accounts our soceity today resembles the fictional creation that Orwell must have had visions of in his head. The very idea that a true democracy can exist in the world as we know it is a fallacy. There are pockets of people in the world that try to emulate democracy as best they can. Organizations like Alcoholics Anonymous try to be democratic. The members are ofcourse individuals who share a common goal. This commonality is the basis for their desire to be democratic in the way they govern their activities. They are, to an extent, the exception to the rule when it comes to our soceity. I see cameras everywhere in America. I was in Baltimore, Maryland recently. I looked out the window and saw a camera with a flashing blue siren light; the king you would see on a police car. There was an inscription atop the camera that warned of the neighborhood crime watch. I thought to myself,this is truly a police state now. Imagine a camera inside your television. 1984 was the year that I read the book "1984". I now see that George Orwell was onto something. I live in Texas. I can't imagine why our government would need a camera in west Texas; the desert. However, maybe one day they will put one there. Our highways have cameras positioned along the sides to monitor traffic conditions. Every morning the local news shows the video from them to give commuters a heads up. Is our soceity so concerned about what others are doing so much that we must have an eye on them at all times to provide some type of security in order for us to be comforted. I recall hearing a saying when I was younger. It's ten o'clock do you know wher your kids are? I thought that it was funny when I was a kid. I was generally in the house as I recall. Now I see cameras that let me know where my kids are if I was curious. People carry cell phones that have GPS locators in them and they are able to be tracked anywhere, virtually, in the world. How long, I wonder, will it be before our thoughts are monitored as well as our comings and goings?
