Fantastic Mr Fox
(karan01)
Roald Dahl felt particular satisfaction with Fantastic Mr Fox. Of all his stories, he felt that this one was the best-balanced book with everything in the right place. Published in 1970, Fantastic Mr Fox is certainly a story written to the highest standards and one which children will love as much as The Twits, George?s Marvellous Medicine or any of Dahl?s other works. The story revolves around the attempts of three evil farmers to destroy Mr and Mrs Fox and their three young children. The fat Mr Boggis, who eats three chickens a day; the short Mr Bunce who lives off goose-liver doughnuts; and the tall, skinny Mr Bean who drinks only cider and eats nothing try to dig the fox family out of their underground den. Unsuccessful in their attempts, they camp outside the entrance to the lair in an attempt to starve the foxes out. Unfortunately for them, they are outwitted by Mr Fox who digs underground tunnels to the farmers? storehouses. Thus, the farmers sit day after day waiting for the starving foxes to come out of their den. However, the foxes are more than happy underground, feasting on the farmers? produce, along with their friends, the badgers, weasels, moles and rabbits. This is a marvellous story for children. As in other Dahl books, such as the ones mentioned above, the books use simple language and the stories, whilst presented in novel format, are short enough for seven-year-olds (and upwards) to be able to cope with. The story, itself, is full of fun; with the nasty farmers being made fools off whilst the animals below have a wonderful time. In Fantastic Mr Fox, Roald Dahl has created another of his timeless classics.
