The Legend Of The Swam
(Reader's Digest)
The fairy castle of Neuschwanstein perched above the rugged gorge of the river Pollak in the Bavarian Alps, is the world's most magical castle. The castle is based on The Legend Of The Swam- Lohengrin. King Ludwig2, heard his first opera- Lohengrin in the year 1861.The opera was composed by Richard Wagner.
Lohengrin was premiered in Weimar on 28 August 1850.According to Wagner's interpretation, Lohengrin, the Swan Knight, sails along the river Schelde to Antwerp in a boat drawn by a swan. There he becomes the champion of a noble lady in distress, Else, the princess of Brabant. He eventually marries Else, on condition that she nevers asks him his name or origin. But on their wedding night, she breaks he promise and he answers her question, whereupon the Swan reappears and Lohengrin departs as mysteriously as he had arrived.
A mural depecting Lohengrin's arrival in Antwerp still hangs above a stove in the living room at Neuschwanstein.Ludwig's taste for the theatre led him on one occasion to stage this scene on the Alpsee, a lake near the castle.
