This book has gained something of a cult following over the years. Its initial joy lies in the numberludicrously funny, but horibly frightening situations 'dr. Gonzo' and his 200 pound Samoanattorney get themselves into though the medium of drugs on the LA strip. A hell of a lot of drugs. Semi-autobiogrical, it is obviously a savage exaggeration of a truth that occured to Hunter S .Thompson in the early 1970's. The opening pages of this book are some of the funniest you'll ever read, when these two, just coming up on numberous different illegal substances decide to take a hickhiker on board their 'Great Red Shark,' and try to explain to him that they were out to find the American Dream. The brilliantly written stream ofbeliefsand incoherent thoughts thrust upon this new found friend by dr. Gonzo is some of the best dark humour ever written. The 'heart of the thing,' is, if fact that American dream. These new left overs from the 1960's trying to cling on to the believe that they had turned a corner in the history of evelution, that they were the examplification of freedom and living the dream, when the Dream had already been savegly slammed in thier faces. Although critics of this book will show it as a piece advocating the taking of drugs, it actually ahows the horrors and dissalussion that they bring.From the exert where he goes back to a memory of his teens and trys to get advice from a local doctor on taking LSD, only to find him humming loudly, which he realised was him trying to block everyone and everything out of his paranoid state of mind. If you love dark humour then you will love this book. It is written at break neck speed, and is full of horrifying drug induced situations, in the most bizzard place of all, Las Vegas. This is one of the first books to look back at the sixties as both a wonderful time and place in history, but also the start of a false dawn, and predicts some of those who would try forever to lose themselves like they had back then.
